Chinese Opera - Backstage

In Malaysia today, Chinese Opera is still performed by professional troupes in Teochew, Hokkien and Cantonese dialects. The function of the opera are mainly as religious ceremonies and social events.

These are taken at Klang's The Nine Emperor Gods Festival (Chinese: 九皇爺 pinyin:jiǔhuángyé, Hokkien (Min Nan): Kow Ong Yah, Cantonese: Kow Wong Yeh) is a Chinese festival to celebrate the return from heaven to earth of the Nine Emperor spirits, who are worshipped as one deity known as Ma Zu, Ma Tzu or Tian Hou (Chinese: 妈祖/天后), literally means Queen of Heaven who represent health, wealth and prosperity.

How much longer can this culture stand the test of time ? Mr Ong, the owner of this troupe from Muar told me. He is giving 3 to 5 years before we have to totally import opera actors from China or Taiwan for play here. Even now, Mr Ong have to enlist 2 actors from Taiwan..
